Bulgaria
Mountains, monasteries and Europe on a budget
Bulgaria is arguably the most affordable country in the European Union, a well-kept secret for the Cameroonian traveler dreaming of Europe without Swiss or French prices. Sofia, the capital, blends golden Orthodox domes, Roman ruins visible under glass pavements and trendy cafés. Beyond the city you'll find golden Black Sea beaches, ski resorts in the Balkans and the Rila Monastery tucked in the mountains. For a Cameroonian the challenge is the Schengen visa, but once there your money stretches far further than anywhere else in Europe.

The visa, step by step
How to apply
Bulgaria has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025. It has no functioning embassy in Yaoundé, and no other Schengen country represents it in Cameroon (France does not either). Its embassy covering Cameroon is in Abuja (Nigeria): email its consular section (Consular.Abuja@mfa.bg) before doing anything to find out where and how to apply. You apply in person, with fingerprints taken.
Required documents
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid 3 months beyond return, with 2 blank pages
- Completed and signed Schengen form + 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo
- Return flight and accommodation bookings
- Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000
- Bank statements and proof of employment
Good to know
- •Treated as a standard Schengen visa: show strong finances and strong ties to Cameroon.
- •No way to apply in Cameroon: if Bulgaria is only a stopover, apply to the Schengen country where you will spend the most time.
