Turkmenistan
White marble, desert and the gates of hell
Turkmenistan is one of the world's most closed and surreal countries. Its capital Ashgabat is a city of white marble and golden fountains, a Guinness record-holder for its gleaming buildings, while the Karakum Desert holds the famous flaming Darvaza crater, the 'gates of hell'. For a Cameroonian traveller it is a demanding adventure: the visa rests on a letter of invitation through a local agency and a guide usually accompanies the trip. Total disorientation guaranteed.

The visa, step by step
How to apply
Turkmenistan requires a letter of invitation (LOI) certified by the State Migration Service, obtained through a licensed local travel agency. Once the LOI is approved (10-15 working days), the visa is collected at the relevant embassy or, in some cases, on arrival at Ashgabat airport with the original LOI. Allow 6-8 weeks of preparation.
Required documents
- Passport valid 6 months beyond return
- Letter of invitation (LOI) certified by the Migration Service
- Visa application form
- Recent passport photos
- Confirmed itinerary with the local agency
Good to know
- •No embassy in Cameroon: target the nearest competent embassy
- •The invitation letter is essential, even for a visa on arrival
- •A local guide is in practice mandatory on most tours
