AFCON 2027 in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania: visas, flights and stadiums from Cameroon

For the first time, three countries are hosting AFCON. Visas, flights from Douala, host cities, yellow fever card and budget: everything to follow the Indomitable Lions in East Africa.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations takes place from 19 June to 17 July 2027, with 24 teams, in three countries at once: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. It's a first in the history of the competition, and AFCON's return to East Africa for the first time since 1976. If you want to follow the Lions there, here's what you need to know from Cameroon.

Where do the Indomitable Lions stand?

Cameroon, five-time African champions, still has to qualify. Their group: Congo, Namibia and the Comoros. The top two go to AFCON.

After two matchdays, the Lions lead the group with 4 points: a 3-1 win over the Comoros, then a 1-1 draw in Congo. The rest plays out in November 2026, with the double-header against Namibia, and the verdict comes in March 2027.

Kenya: nothing to apply for

Since July 2025, Kenya has scrapped the visa and the electronic travel authorisation (eTA) for African nationals. For a Cameroonian, entry is free, for stays of up to 60 days. Matches are played in Nairobi, which has a brand-new 60,000-seat stadium.

Between matches: a safari in Nairobi National Park, about twenty minutes from the city centre (giraffes, rhinos, lions with skyscrapers in the background). And in July, the Great Migration begins in the Maasai Mara.

Uganda: $50 e-visa

The tourist visa is applied for online, before departure, on the official Ugandan immigration portal: 50 dollars. Matches are held at Mandela Stadium in Kampala and in Hoima, in the west of the country.

Must-sees: the source of the Nile in Jinja and the gorillas of Bwindi (book your permit very early). Must-try: the rolex, a chapati rolled around an omelette, the national snack.

Tanzania: $50 e-visa and insurance

The ordinary visa costs 50 dollars and is applied for online. Host cities: Dar es Salaam (60,000-seat stadium), Arusha and Zanzibar.

Must-sees: Stone Town, the spice tour and the beaches of Nungwi.

Golden rules for all three countries

  • Yellow fever vaccination card: mandatory. Cameroon is a risk country, so you will be asked for it.
  • Time: two hours ahead of Douala. An 8 pm kick-off there is 6 pm in Cameroon.
  • Plugs: British-style (type G). Bring an adapter.
  • Currency: three different shillings (Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian). Withdraw cash locally or change dollars.
  • Weather: AFCON falls at the start of the dry season in East Africa, a good time to travel.

How much does it cost?

In a hostel, a night starts at around 4,800 FCFA in Tanzania. We compared the three countries round by round (visa, flight, night, one-week total) in another article: Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania, which is cheapest?

A couple of words of Swahili

In Kenya and Tanzania (and a little in Uganda): karibu, welcome, and asante, thank you.

Visas, flights and budgets for all three countries are on Travora: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, for travellers leaving from Cameroon.
