Togolese passport: 30 visa-free countries… and the Kenya trap

Do you have a Togolese passport? You can visit 30 countries visa-free, according to Travora's data as of 18 October 2026. But "visa-free" doesn't mean "nothing to prepare": in one of these countries, you can be stopped at boarding. The trap is at the end.

All of ECOWAS, up to 90 days

Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire… ECOWAS free movement lets Togolese citizens enter visa-free, for a stay of up to 90 days.

What about Ghana?

Since 25 May 2026, Ghana has required Africans to obtain a free online authorisation (ETA) before departure. It doesn't apply to you: this process targets Africans outside ECOWAS and outside the AES. With a Togolese passport, your passport and your yellow fever card are enough.

Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger

They left ECOWAS in January 2025 to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). But the AES remains visa-free for ECOWAS nationals. For a Togolese citizen: still visa-free.

The craziest part is far from Africa

Singapore is the surprise: the Togolese passport gets in visa-free, while Nigerian and Malian passports need a visa. For Barbados, the visa waiver has been presented as temporary since 2022, with no end date: check it before booking.

The Kenya trap

Kenya: visa-free and no eTA (electronic travel authorisation) for a Togolese citizen, for up to 60 days. So nothing to do? Wrong.

The official website says it clearly: being exempt from the eTA does not exempt you from the insurance. Exemptions are rare: citizens of the East African Community, Kenyan residents, diplomatic passports and transit passengers who don't enter the country.

What you need for Kenya:

• a valid passport;
• the Kenyan health insurance, bought online before departure;
• your yellow fever vaccination card;
• a return ticket.
