Togolese passport: 99 countries you can visit without going to an embassy
Koffi, from Lomé, swore his passport took him "nowhere". Travora counts 29 visa-free countries, 14 with visa on arrival and 56 by e-visa: 99 destinations, no embassy.
Third episode of our series on African passports. Djo has already lost this bet twice, with Cameroon and then Côte d'Ivoire. This time it's Koffi, from Lomé, who is sure of himself: with a Togolese passport, "you can't go anywhere". Travora's numbers, as of 4 October 2026, say something completely different:
| Type of access | Number of countries |
|---|---|
| Visa-free | 29 |
| Visa on arrival | 14 |
| E-visa | 56 |
| Total without an embassy | 99 |
Visa-free countries
ECOWAS, right next door
You'd need a visa even for Benin, a few kilometres from Lomé? Wrong. Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal… ECOWAS free movement lets Togolese citizens enter without a visa, for a stay of up to 90 days.
What about Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali?
They left ECOWAS in January 2025 to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). But the AES remains a visa-free area for ECOWAS nationals, and ECOWAS does the same in return. For a Togolese traveller, nothing changes: still visa-free.
Further afield
- Kenya: up to 60 days, with no visa or online authorisation since July 2025;
- the Philippines (30 days) and Singapore;
- Barbados, in the Caribbean.
Visa on arrival countries
14 countries issue the visa directly at the airport, including the Maldives, Mauritius and Madagascar. Bring a return ticket, a hotel booking and proof that you can cover your expenses.
E-visa countries
The longest list: 56 countries, where you apply online from your phone. Among them: Thailand (e-visa open worldwide since January 2025), Vietnam, India… and Cameroon.
The visa-free country nobody expects
That's the surprise at the end of the video: Ecuador, in South America. Togo is not on the list of 45 countries whose citizens Ecuador requires a visa from (list published in July 2025): so a Togolese citizen can enter visa-free for tourism, for up to 90 days.
What you still need
"Visa-free" doesn't mean "nothing needed". Most often:
- a passport valid for 6 months after your return date;
- a return ticket;
- your yellow fever vaccination card.
Check a specific country
Choose Togo as your country of departure on Travora: the visa guide shows all three lists, and every destination has its own page (documents, length of stay, budget in CFA francs, season).
Have a different passport? The episodes already out: the Cameroonian passport and the Ivorian passport. And to see how Togo ranks against its neighbours: the ECOWAS Passport Cup.
Information checked on 16 October 2026 against the official sources below. Visa rules change often: confirm again before you book.
