Gambia
The Smiling Coast, West African beaches and river
Mainland Africa's smallest country, The Gambia wraps around its namesake river and unrolls sun-soaked Atlantic beaches — hence the nickname "the Smiling Coast." People come for the easy pace of life, birdwatching with over 500 species, the moving history of Kunta Kinteh Island (a UNESCO-listed memory of the slave trade) and the legendary warmth of Gambians. A seaside-and-nature getaway, refreshingly different for a Cameroonian traveller — provided you plan a flight with a stopover.

The visa, step by step
How to apply
Nothing to apply for before you leave: The Gambia waives visas for citizens of the African Union, ECOWAS and the Commonwealth, and Cameroon is a member of both the AU and the Commonwealth. On arrival in Banjul, show a valid passport, your return ticket, your accommodation booking and enough funds for your stay.
Required documents
- Cameroonian passport valid at least 6 months beyond return
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (required on entry)
- Return ticket and itinerary
- Accommodation booking / confirmation of lodging
- Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
Good to know
- •The Gambia's new visa policy (February 2026): citizens of the African Union, ECOWAS and the Commonwealth are visa-exempt, for stays of up to 90 days.
- •Older lists (Gambian embassy in Brussels, 2019) required a visa and an entry clearance from Cameroonians: they are out of date.
- •The yellow fever certificate is mandatory for all travellers.

A one-week budget
Round-trip flight from Douala / Yaoundé
360 000 FCFA–660 000 FCFABanjul (BJL) from Douala or Yaoundé: no direct flight, expect 1 to 2 stopovers (Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca, Turkish via Istanbul, Air Senegal via Dakar, Ethiopian, or Camair-Co). It's the most expensive and longest of the three; book well ahead.
Indicative round-trip price: it varies widely by season, layover and how early you book.

What to do there
The beaches of the Smiling Coast
Kotu, Kololi, Bijilo or the wilder Sanyang: golden sand, Atlantic waters and colourful pirogues coming in from fishing. Beach restaurants, swimming and lazing along the tourist coast.
Kunta Kinteh Island (UNESCO)
Head up the river by boat through the mangroves to the ruins of the fort on Kunta Kinteh Island, a key site of the slave trade, with a stop at Juffureh village and the Albreda museum. A moving page of history.
Gambia River cruise and wildlife
The Gambia River runs the length of the country: pirogue trips to spot hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and exceptional birdlife in the wetlands and River Gambia National Park.
Birdwatching
With over 500 species, The Gambia is a birder's paradise. Abuko Nature Reserve, the Bijilo sacred forest and the riverbanks teem with colourful birds, accessible with a local guide.
Banjul, Arch 22 and Albert Market
The capital offers Arch 22 (an iconic monument with panoramic views and a small museum) and Albert Market, the country's largest, brimming with fabrics, crafts and fresh produce.
Kachikally sacred crocodile pool
In Bakau, this sacred pool holds crocodiles you can approach and even touch, a site of fertility rituals; a small museum tells the local traditions.
