Visa basics

The 4 African countries where all Africans enter visa-free (and no, not Ghana)

No visa, no authorisation to apply for, whatever your African passport: only 4 African countries pass the test. Ghana, Seychelles and Kenya narrowly miss out.

Of Africa's 54 countries, how many let all Africans in without a visa? Only 4. And no, Ghana is not one of them. We checked, country by country.

The rule

To make the list, a country must meet two conditions:

  • no visa and no authorisation to apply for before you travel (no e-visa, no eTA, even free ones);
  • and that for any African passport, not just its neighbours'.

The near misses

Ghana

Since 25 May 2026, Ghana has scrapped fees for Africans. Good news… but you still have to apply online before you travel, for a free authorisation (except ECOWAS and AES citizens, who are already visa-free). Free does not mean no paperwork: Ghana does not pass the test.

Seychelles

No visa, for anyone. But a paid travel authorisation (about €10), to apply for online before departure, for everyone.

Chad and Congo

They have announced the end of visas for all Africans… from 1 January 2027. So not yet. And for Congo, the bill adopted by the Council of Ministers on 14 October 2026 would reportedly introduce an electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers: it could therefore stay off the list, even in 2027.

Kenya, two countries short

The closest: in Kenya, 51 of 53 African passports enter without a visa or eTA. But Libya and Somalia still have to apply online. Missed, by two countries.

The 4 countries that say yes to everyone

CountryVisa-free stayWhat you need to know
Benin90 days"Africans can visit Benin without a visa," says its official portal
Gambia90 daysFor all citizens of the African Union
Togo30 daysSince 18 May 2026, with a simple online declaration 24 hours before
Rwanda30 daysNothing to apply for, nothing to pay, on arrival

Benin

Benin's official e-visa portal states it in black and white: Africans can visit Benin without a visa for 90 days.

One caveat: the African Development Bank's 2025 report says Benin once again requires a visa for 5 countries (Angola, Gabon, Mauritius, Morocco and Namibia). If you hold one of these passports, check with the Benin embassy before you travel.

Gambia

Its new visa policy, published in February 2026, grants 90 days visa-free to all citizens of the African Union, with no prior paperwork. The only cost: a $20 airport tax, paid on site.

Togo

Since 18 May 2026, all Africans enter Togo visa-free for 30 days. The only formality: an online travel declaration on voyage.gouv.tg, at least 24 hours before arrival. It is not an authorisation you have to wait for, but it is mandatory: don't forget it.

Rwanda

African Union citizens get a 30-day stay on arrival, free of charge and with nothing to apply for beforehand (the online application exists, but it is optional). According to the African Development Bank, Rwanda and Gambia are in fact the only two countries open visa-free to all Africans. We covered it in detail for Cameroonians in our article on Rwanda.

What about your passport?

These 4 countries accept everyone. But depending on your passport, other African countries are open to you visa-free: ECOWAS for West Africans, CEMAC for Central Africa… On Travora, choose your departure country: the visa guide shows all your visa-free, visa-on-arrival and e-visa countries. For example, the Cameroon guide.
