Schengen visa refused in Cameroon: what you lose, and your 30-day appeal
A Schengen visa refusal costs a Cameroonian applicant at least €128 (about 84,000 FCFA). The refusal figures, the boxes ticked on the letter, and what you can still do: the 30-day appeal or a new application.
Your Schengen visa application has just been refused? Djo asked Vora: "Have I lost everything?" Not everything, but not nothing either. Here is what a refusal costs when you apply in Cameroon for France, why so many applications are refused, and what you can still do. Figures checked again on 4 November 2026.
How much does a refused visa cost?
For a France short-stay visa, applied for in Cameroon:
| Fee | Amount | Refunded if refused? |
|---|---|---|
| Visa fee (Schengen rate) | €90 (about 59,000 FCFA) | No |
| TLScontact service fee (Douala, Yaoundé, Garoua) | €38 (about 25,000 FCFA) | Not provided for |
| Total | €128 (about 84,000 FCFA) |
And that's only the minimum: add transport to the centre, copies, translations, sometimes bookings paid in advance. The French public service is clear: if the visa is refused, the amount paid is not refunded.
Are you the only one? Far from it
Cameroon is one of the countries where refusals are most frequent:
- 2024: about 51,700 Schengen visa applications lodged in Cameroon, 38% refused (nearly 2 in 5);
- 2025 (statistics published by the European Commission at the end of May 2026): 57,469 applications, 40.3% refused;
- the Schengen-wide average is around 15% (about 14.5% in 2025).
In 2024 alone, the applications refused in Cameroon left more than one billion FCFA in visa fees, never refunded.
Why your visa was refused
The refusal letter is a standard European form: ticked boxes give the reasons. Among those that come up often:
- the purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified (vague itinerary, inconsistent booking, incomplete invitation);
- your means of subsistence are judged insufficient for the stay and the return;
- the officer has doubts about your return to Cameroon before the visa expires (work, family or financial ties poorly proven);
- the travel insurance is missing or not enough.
Read your letter line by line: each ticked box tells you what to fix.
Your appeal: 30 days, not one more
For a short-stay visa refused by France, the procedure has two steps:
- The administrative appeal (mandatory): you write to the sous-directeur des visas (deputy director for visas, General Directorate for Foreigners in France, Ministry of the Interior) within 30 days of being notified of the refusal. Explain why the refusal is unjustified and attach documents that answer each ticked reason. Without this appeal, you cannot go to court.
- The administrative court of Nantes: if the deputy director rejects your appeal, or doesn't answer within 2 months (silence counts as a refusal), you have 2 months to take the case to the tribunal administratif de Nantes.
The deputy director can reject your appeal, or ask the consulate to issue the visa. For a visa refused by another Schengen country (Belgium, Germany, Italy…), the appeal routes and deadlines are that country's own: they are written on your refusal letter.
Or apply again?
You can, at any time. But a new application means a new file and new fees (€90 + €38 for France). It only makes sense if you fix what was held against you: stronger proof of funds, a precise itinerary, proof you'll return, compliant insurance. Submitting the same file means paying again for the same refusal.
And when a form asks whether you have ever been refused a visa, answer yes: the refusal is recorded in the Visa Information System (VIS).
