Study in Spain from Congo-Brazzaville

PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit. Spain has no visa section in Congo-Brazzaville: its embassy in Kinshasa is accredited to the Republic of the Congo, the honorary consulates in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire do not handle visas, and short-stay visas for Congolese nationals go through the French Embassy in Brazzaville. No official page read says where a Congolese resident of Brazzaville submits a national student visa: Kinshasa is inferred from the accreditation and must be confirmed in writing with the embassy. For admission, a grado (bachelor's) at a public university requires homologación (recognition) of the bac (fee of €49.76) and UNEDasiss accreditation, then regional pre-registration (March in Andalusia, June-July in Madrid); a máster or a doctorate is requested directly from the university. The financial requirement is the lowest of the five destinations: €600 per month (393,574 FCFA). You also need a medical certificate, a legalized and translated criminal record extract, insurance covering all the risks of the public system, and proof of payment of enrollment. Visa fee in Kinshasa, processing times and appointments for a national visa: not found.

Before the visa

Admission route

Grado (public university): homologación (recognition) of the bac as the Spanish Bachiller by the Spanish Ministry of Education (legalized documents and official translation into Spanish, with a "volante" for conditional enrollment in the meantime), UNEDasiss accreditation (from February 4 to December 1), optional PCE (specific entrance exams), pre-registration in the autonomous community. Máster and doctorate: direct application, the university checks the level of the degree without homologación. FP de grado superior (higher vocational training): homologación (or proof of application) then regional admission application. Public or private institution, but officially recognized, full-time studies, enrollment paid. PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][40][41]

Admission procedure fees

  • Homologación of the bac (form 790)[1][2](bachelor's, short program)€49.76≈ 32,640 FCFA
  • UNEDasiss accreditation and PCE[37][38](bachelor's)amount not found

UNEDasiss fee schedule checked on 13 October 2026: admission score €70; file opening €30.30 and administration €15.15; Bachillerato modality €25; language accreditation €25 per language; subject recognition €25 per authorised subject. PCE exams cost €35/60/80/100/120/140 in total for 1/2/3/4/5/6 subjects. Select the services required by the university: there is no single flat fee. Calculated example: admission score + file opening + administration = €115.45, excluding PCE and other services. The 2027 schedule is unconfirmed; the corridor subtotal excludes these variable services.

The visa application

Where to apply

Where to file
Kinshasa (to be confirmed); the honorary consulates in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire do not handle visas; the French Embassy in Brazzaville only issues short-stay visas for Spain
Authority
Spanish Embassy in Kinshasa (accredited to the DRC and the Republic of the Congo) — jurisdiction over national student visas for residents of Congo inferred, not written
Appointment
The national student visa appointment procedure is unconfirmed. The 2025 “CITA VISADO EST” page describes short-stay timelines and does not establish the student visa procedure.
Tip
Write to the embassy as soon as you are admitted to confirm where to submit and the procedure; do not call the honorary consulates about a visa. Other embassies ask for an appointment at least two months before classes (Yaoundé advises a year in advance).
Processing time
One month at most under the current regulation (embassy pages: two months, an old figure). Actual processing time in Kinshasa not published.[14][20][26]
Interview
Yes · Spanish Embassy (Kinshasa, to be confirmed) · Personal interview possible at any stage of the procedure.[8][14]
Good to know
Kinshasa’s national Study visa page was found and read on 13 October 2026. It accepts residents of the consular district, but leaves the submission location blank and does not detail appointments for Congo-Brazzaville residents. Specific national-visa jurisdiction and submission arrangements still require confirmation; do not automatically use the Schengen procedure. For a PhD, ask the competent consulate about RIN visa submission after UGE-CE approval; confirmation of the study-visa channel does not confirm the research-visa channel.

Sources for filing[10][11][12][13][14][36][39][40][41]

In order

The steps

  1. 1

PhD: use the RIN research route[40][41]

When: before any PhD visa application

For a PhD recognised at MECES level 4: apply online to UGE-CE for national research authorisation (article 72 of Law 14/2013), through the doctoral candidate or institution, then obtain a RIN visa if residing abroad. Without a research contract: admission to a RUCT-registered PhD, paid enrolment, MI-T form, compliant insurance, criminal-record certificates covering residence countries over the last two years and a declaration covering five years, and fee 790-038. Required resources: at least 50% of the annual SMI without family, 100% with family according to the ministry; this is not the €600/month student threshold. Confirm the amounts and complete checklist for the individual application and filing year.

  2. 2

Choose the program and check the institution's recognition[8][9][14]

When: up to one year before the start of classes

Institution officially recognized in Spain, full-time studies; the visa requires admission and payment of tuition fees (matrícula).

  3. 3

Grado: homologación of the bac and UNEDasiss[1][4][5][15][16]

    When: February-July 2027

Homologación application to the Spanish Ministry of Education with diploma and transcripts of the last two years legalized and officially translated into Spanish (fee €49.76); submitting it gives a "volante" for conditional enrollment. UNEDasiss accreditation from February 4 to December 1, at least 6 weeks before pre-registration closes; optional PCE (exams in Africa at the end of May). Pre-registration: Andalusia from March 6 to 19 (2026 calendar), Madrid until July 6 for foreign education systems (2026).

    • Homologación of the bac[1][2]€49.76≈ 32,640 FCFA
    • UNEDasiss accreditation, PCE[37][38]amount not found

  4. 4

    Máster or doctorate: direct application[6][7]

    When: depending on the university

The university checks that the Congolese degree matches the required level, without homologación; diplomas legalized through diplomatic channels and officially translated into Spanish.

  5. 5

    Prepare local documents[8][17][18][19]

When: within 3 months before submission

Stay of more than 180 days: medical certificate (International Health Regulations 2005) and criminal record extract from the countries of residence of the last 5 years, legalized and translated. No apostille in Congo: legalization at the Congolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by the Spanish representation (mission responsible for legalization not found). Documents translated into Spanish. Place, processing time and cost of the Congolese criminal record extract: not found.

Write to the Spanish Embassy in Kinshasa to confirm that it accepts student visas from residents of Congo and the appointment procedure; the email procedure published in 2025 (subject "CITA VISADO EST") seems to be for short stays.

  8. 8

Arrange travel only after the submission location is confirmed[22][23][24]

When: day of the appointment (and of collection)

If the embassy confirms submission in Kinshasa, check current DRC entry requirements for the journey and passport collection with the DRC authorities. Sources found on cross-border arrangements date from 2014–2019 and do not establish today’s rules. Do not book travel solely because the embassy is accredited to Congo-Brazzaville. Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • No Spanish visa section in Congo: place of submission for the national student visa not written (Kinshasa inferred from the embassy's accreditation), to be confirmed.
  • The honorary consulates in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire do not handle visas; the French Embassy in Brazzaville only represents Spain for short stays.
  • Crossing the Congo River and DRC entry formalities to plan for the submission.
  • No apostille: legalization of Congolese documents (diplomas, criminal record extract), then translation into Spanish.
  • MAEC-AECID África-Med Máster 2026-2027 scholarships closed to nationals of Congo-Brazzaville (the DRC is included); Fundación Carolina reserved for Latin America and Portugal.

Pitfalls to avoid

PhD: a separate research procedure[40][41]

PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit.

Applying in the wrong place[10][11]

Neither the honorary consulate nor the French Embassy in Brazzaville accepts a student visa for Spain; get written confirmation from the embassy in Kinshasa.

Leaving for Kinshasa without checking DRC entry requirements[22][23][24]

The Congo-DRC agreement requires a laissez-passer (pass, 72 hours maximum) for border residents and a passport with a visa for everyone else; public sources contradict each other on the visa exemption. Check with the DRC Embassy in Brazzaville, keep a valid passport, and plan the time and cost of two crossings (submission and collection).

Using the short-stay appointment procedure[12]

The email procedure published in 2025 (code EST, flight reservation, medical insurance) seems to be for short stays: ask for the national visa procedure.

Travel insurance instead of comprehensive insurance[14][20]

The insurance must cover all the risks of the Spanish public system.

Forgetting the criminal record extract and medical certificate[18]

Mandatory for a stay of more than 180 days; the criminal record extract must be legalized and translated.

Counting on AECID scholarships[31][32]

The África-Med Máster 2026-2027 program does not cover Congo-Brazzaville.

Underestimating fees in Madrid[33]

Non-EU non-residents pay the 4th-enrollment price for a grado (€113.71 to €136.44 per credit).
