Study in Spain from Gabon
PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit. A student residing in Gabon submits their study visa application at the Spanish Embassy in Libreville, in person, by appointment requested by email (emb.libreville.vis@maec.es), at least two months before studies begin. First you need an admission letter from an officially recognized institution and, generally, paid enrollment: for a grado (bachelor's) at a public university, homologación (recognition) of the Gabonese bac as the Bachiller (€49.76), UNEDasiss accreditation and regional pre-enrollment; for a máster or a doctorate, direct application. The financial requirement is low: €600 per month (393,574 FCFA according to the embassy). For a stay of more than 180 days, a criminal record extract and a medical certificate are added; Gabonese documents must be legalized (Gabon does not apply the apostille) and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. Visa fee: 59,000 FCFA. The embassy announces a legal processing time of two months, whereas the 2024 regulation sets one month for an application submitted abroad.

FP de grado superior (higher vocational training): homologación or proof of application, regional admission. PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. Differences and pitfalls
What differs from the general rule
- Visa filed in Libreville itself, by appointment requested by email, at least two months before studies begin.
- National visa: CFA 59,000 according to Libreville’s January 2026 consular fee schedule.
- Means proven by parents' pay slips, proof of transfer and a notarized commitment to send money monthly.
- No apostille in Gabon: legalization at the Gabonese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then sworn translation into Spanish (Yaoundé does not require a professional translation, Libreville does).
- Gabon is among the countries eligible for MAEC-AECID África-Med Máster scholarships, reserved for tenured civil servants.
- Processing time of two months announced by the embassy, versus one month in the regulations in force.
Pitfalls to avoid
PhD: a separate research procedure[31][32]
PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit.
Applying too late[8]
The ministry’s published rule requires applying at least two months before classes. The older local page’s 45-day pre-travel guideline is insufficient for planning the application.
Documents not legalized or not translated[8][13]
Legalization at the Gabonese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sworn translation into Spanish, for the criminal record as well as the diplomas.
Travel insurance instead of real insurance[9][20]
It must cover all the risks of the Spanish public system, with an insurer authorized in Spain.
Bac homologación started too late[4][5]
It is required for UNEDasiss accreditation and a place in a grado; request the volante as soon as possible.
Underestimating fees in Madrid[17]
4th-enrollment rate for non-resident non-Europeans: €6,822.60 to €8,186.40 for 60 credits.
Forgetting the TIE[20]
The visa for a stay of more than 6 months is valid for only 90 days: TIE within one month of entry.
