Study in Germany from Gabon

Germany has no visa service in Gabon: a student residing in Gabon submits their national study visa application at the German Embassy in Yaoundé (Cameroon), whose district covers Gabon. They register on the consular portal (Auslandsportal) giving Cameroon as their place of residence, then travel to Yaoundé to submit (VFS Global or embassy) with all originals, including the original birth certificate. A Gabonese citizen enters Cameroon without a visa (CEMAC free movement) with a valid passport. Before that: check university access with the Gabonese bac (otherwise Studienkolleg), take an ALTE German certificate (no center found in Gabon; Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé: B1 130,000 FCFA, TestDaF 73,000 FCFA), apply via uni-assist (€75, then €30 per choice) and open a Sperrkonto (blocked account) of €11,904 (7,808,512 FCFA) with a bank established in Germany. Visa: 50,000 FCFA, free for holders of publicly funded scholarships. Pitfalls: embassy waiting lists (over a year in the « Study B » category in 2023), possible verification of Gabonese documents (up to 12 months), no more remonstration (administrative appeal) since July 2025, and no ANBG scholarship documented for Germany.

Before the visa

Admission route

Application university by university: via uni-assist for most public universities, otherwise on the institution's portal (private schools, many Master's programs in English, PhD/doctorate). The standing of the Gabonese baccalauréat (direct access, limited access or Studienkolleg) can be checked on anabin or with uni-assist's « Check Hochschulzugang » tool: the Gabon entry could not be read on 12/10/2026. Bacs from French-speaking Africa often lead to the Studienkolleg (one year, then Feststellungsprüfung) unless university years have been completed. PhD/doctorate: agreement from a thesis supervisor, without uni-assist.[1][2][3][4][5]

Admission procedure fees

  • Uni-assist, first choice (per semester)[1]€75≈ 49,197 FCFA

Non-refundable; payment on the uni-assist portal.

  • Uni-assist, additional choice (same semester)[1]€30≈ 19,679 FCFA

The steps

  1. 1

Check university access with the Gabonese bac[3][5][10]

When: 12 to 18 months before the start of the academic year (from fall 2026 for October 2027)

Consult anabin (KMK), the DAAD database or uni-assist's « Check Hochschulzugang »: direct access, access limited to certain fields, or Studienkolleg. Results are indicative; the university decides. Gabon entry not read on 12/10/2026: check before any application.

  2. 2

Learn German and take an ALTE certificate[7][11][12][13]

When: from 2026; TestDaF in Yaoundé on 15/10/2026, 2027 dates not published

The embassy in Yaoundé accepts TestDaF, Goethe-Institut, ÖSD, telc and ECL; the oldest module must be less than one year old. No German exam center was found in Gabon: the Goethe-Institut Kamerun (Yaoundé) administers the Goethe-Zertifikat (B1 130,000 FCFA, B2 150,000 FCFA, C1 170,000 FCFA) and the TestDaF (73,000 FCFA). Final university enrollment: DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4, Goethe C2 or equivalent; B1 is enough to apply to a Studienkolleg.

When: at the same time as the application

Diplomas, transcripts and original birth certificate (full copy requested from the civil registry; copies and duplicates refused in Yaoundé). Documents in French do not need translating. The embassy publishes no specific rule for Gabonese documents: it refers to the contact form for documents from Gabon and may verify their authenticity (up to 12 months of processing). No apostille in Gabon; legalization of Gabonese documents is handled by the Gabonese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (fee and processing time not found), without the German Embassy expressly requiring it.

Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • No German visa service in Gabon: study visa submitted in Yaoundé (Cameroon), whose embassy covers Gabon.
  • On the Auslandsportal, a resident of Gabon must give Cameroon as their place of residence to be able to register.
  • A Gabonese citizen enters Cameroon without a visa (CEMAC free movement) with a valid passport, for a stay of less than three months.
  • Schengen short-stay visas (for example for an admission test): submitted by Gabonese citizens to France in Libreville.
  • No German exam center found in Gabon: exams at the Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé.
  • Gabonese documents in French: no translation; verification rule to be asked case by case at the embassy.
  • Visa fee of 50,000 FCFA, free for holders of publicly funded scholarships; no ANBG scholarship documented for Germany.

Pitfalls to avoid

Forgetting the trip to Cameroon[6][11]

Submission is in person in Yaoundé, and in practice so is the language exam: budget for tickets, accommodation and possibly a second stay to collect the passport.

Registering with Gabon as residence[7]

The embassy asks applicants to give Cameroon as their place of residence; an incorrectly filled-in registration blocks the procedure.

Appointment middlemen[9][17]

Registration and appointment free; only one registration per person; an appointment not confirmed within 7 days is lost.

Very long waiting times[15][17]

Over a year of waiting in the « Study B » category (2023) and up to 12 months of document verification: register early.

Language certificate too old[7]

The oldest module must be less than one year old at submission.

Copy of the birth certificate[8][30]

Only the original is accepted; no more remonstration (administrative appeal) in case of refusal.

Fake blocked accounts and fake guarantors[7][18]

Account with a bank established in Germany, guarantor residing in Germany; confirmation with total amount and monthly sum.
