Study in Germany from Benin
For Germany, a student living in Benin applies on their own, university by university (often via uni-assist: €75 for the first choice, €30 for each additional choice), after checking on anabin whether their bac gives direct access or requires a Studienkolleg (preparatory college); the exact rule for the Beninese bac could not be read. The national student visa is requested at the German Embassy in Cotonou, which covers all residents of Benin, by appointment booked online (consular portal since 2025): €75, i.e. 50,000 FCFA, non-refundable. The only information sheet published by the embassy dates from October 2022: it requires a B1 German certificate (or an English certificate for a program taught in English) and cites an outdated blocked account amount (€11,208); the embassy in Abidjan (October 2025) generally requires level B2. Proof of funds is €11,904 blocked for the first year (€992 per month), i.e. 7,808,512 FCFA, an amount likely to rise with the BAföG reform. Processing can take several months: file as soon as you are admitted. The flow is very small: 34 "study" visas processed in Cotonou in 2025.

Admission route
No centralized procedure: application to each institution, via uni-assist (standard procedure or VPD) for most public universities, otherwise on the university's portal. First check access with the Beninese bac on anabin, the DAAD database or uni-assist's "Check Hochschulzugang" tool: direct access, access limited to certain fields, or Studienkolleg + Feststellungsprüfung (assessment exam) (often the case for a bac from French-speaking Africa without a completed year of university). Benin's anabin entry was not read (dynamic database, 10/12/2026). uni-assist requires certificates in their original language with a certified translation into German or English (except for some countries): a Beninese file in French must therefore be translated. PhD/doctorate: agreement from a thesis supervisor, without uni-assist.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

Differences and pitfalls
What differs from the general rule
- Visa processed at the German Embassy in Cotonou itself, without a service provider or filing in another country (unlike Italy, Spain and Belgium).
- The local sheet (2022) asks for a B1 certificate, while Abidjan (2025) generally asks for B2 and Lomé for C1 or DSH.
- The Cotonou sheet accepts a Beninese government scholarship as proof of funds.
- Beninese file written in French: certified translation into German or English for uni-assist.
- Very few student visas: 34 applications processed in Cotonou in 2025.
- No APS procedure for Benin.
Pitfalls to avoid
Outdated embassy sheet[11][20][28]
The Cotonou sheet dates from October 2022 (blocked account of €11,208): the required amount is €11,904 in 2026, possibly more in 2027. Check the procedure on the consular portal before filing.
Language level too low[11][16][17]
B1 is enough according to the 2022 sheet, but B2 is the rule in recent sheets from the region, and final enrollment requires DSH-2 / TestDaF 4.
Agencies and fake uni-assist payments[2][30]
uni-assist payment requests only come through its portal; no agency has privileged access to universities or appointments.
Converting a tourist visa[8]
A Schengen visa cannot be converted into a student visa: you must leave and file again.
No more remonstration[31]
Since July 1, 2025, a refusal can no longer be challenged by a simple letter: appeal before the Verwaltungsgericht Berlin (administrative court) or a new application.
Private Studienkolleg[6]
Only a few private Studienkollegs issue a recognized diploma; check that the target university accepts the FSP.
Statistics
