Study in Germany from Côte d'Ivoire

There is no centralized procedure: a student residing in Côte d'Ivoire applies university by university, often via uni-assist (€75 for the first choice, €30 for each additional one), after checking the access their bac provides. According to the German Embassy in Abidjan, the Ivorian bac is generally accepted: without restriction for series C and D, with limited fields for A and B, case by case for H; the BTS does not give direct access. Most bachelor's programs are in German (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 for enrollment, at least B2 for the visa); the Goethe-Institut in Abidjan offers B1 to C1 exams (160,000 FCFA for B1 or B2 for an external candidate). The national visa is applied for online on the consular portal (Auslandsportal), then at an appointment at the German Embassy in Abidjan (50,000 FCFA in cash), at least two months before classes; decision in 2 to 6 weeks. Funds are proven with a Sperrkonto (blocked account) of €11,904 (€992 per month), i.e. 7,808,512 FCFA, an amount that could increase for the 2027 intake. Travel insurance is not accepted. Numbers remain low: 92 "study" visa applications processed in Abidjan in 2025.

Admission route

Application to each institution: via uni-assist (standard procedure or VPD) for most public universities, otherwise on the institution's own portal (many master's programs in English, recognized private schools). The PhD/doctorate does not go through uni-assist (agreement of a thesis supervisor). The winter semester starts in October.[1][3][4][5][6][7]

The steps

  1. 1

Check university access with your bac[3][4][6][11]

When: at least 12 months before the start of classes (fall 2026)

Consult the anabin database (KMK) or uni-assist's "Check Hochschulzugang" tool and the embassy document: Ivorian bac generally accepted, series C and D without restriction, A and B limited (humanities, law), H by individual decision; the BTS does not give direct access. Without direct access: Studienkolleg (preparatory college; application often before April 15 for winter, B1 level required) then Feststellungsprüfung (assessment exam).

  2. 2

Choose programs and the language of instruction[8][12][13]

When: 12 to 9 months before

Hochschulkompass catalog: 2,383 programs in English out of 22,426 in the 2025-2026 winter semester. Programs in German: DSH-2, TestDaF 4, telc C1 Hochschule or Goethe C2 for final enrollment; conditional admission is possible with an intensive course of at least 20 hours per week.

  3. 3

Take a language test in Abidjan[14][15]

    When: fall 2026 - spring 2027

Goethe-Institut Abidjan: B1 and B2 at 160,000 FCFA (external candidate), C1 at 170,000 FCFA; 2026 sessions on November 15 and 22 (B1, B2), 2027 dates not published. TestDaF does not appear on the Abidjan dates page. Programs in English: TOEFL or equivalent (Abidjan centers not verified).

120,000 FCFA for an Institute student; C1: 170,000 FCFA.

  4. 4

    When: December 2026 - May 2027

  5. 5

When: as soon as you are admitted

Provider fees on top (example Expatrio: €119 opening fee and €9 per month, i.e. 148,902 FCFA over 12 months), plus international transfer fees.

  8. 8

File the application online on the Auslandsportal[8][9]

When: by early August 2027 at the latest for classes in October

Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • The Ivorian bac generally gives direct access (series C and D without restriction), whereas other French-speaking bacs often lead to the Studienkolleg; the BTS does not give direct access.
  • Visa fee set in local currency: 50,000 FCFA in cash (25,000 FCFA for a minor according to the 2023 information sheet).
  • Ivorian documents, written in French, must be uploaded with their translation (in Yaoundé, French is accepted without translation).
  • No external service provider: online submission then an appointment at the embassy; non-Ivorians: residence permit; ECOWAS nationals: consular card.
  • Goethe B1 to C1 exams in Abidjan; TestDaF does not appear on the Goethe-Institut Abidjan exam dates page.
  • No official table of appointment wait times was found for Abidjan (in Yaoundé, more than a year for a regular admission).

Pitfalls to avoid

Travel insurance rejected[8]

The Abidjan embassy does not accept travel health insurance for studies.

"Glaubhaft gemacht" sponsor[8]

A Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation) bearing the mention "glaubhaft gemacht" is rejected.

Incomplete blocked account confirmation[16][18]

A confirmation without the total amount and the monthly amount is not sufficient; the ministry accepts no liability if a provider defaults.

Blocked account amount may rise[29][33]

The BAföG reform planned for 2027 could raise the €992 per month: allow a margin.

Tourist visa converted on arrival[17]

A Schengen visa cannot be converted into a student visa: you would have to leave and reapply in Abidjan.

No more administrative appeal[22]

Since July 1, 2025, a refusal can no longer be challenged with the embassy: get your first application right.

Agencies and fake payment requests[2][34]

No intermediary has privileged access; uni-assist payments are made only on its portal.

Private Studienkolleg[6]

Few private Studienkollegs award a recognized exam: check before paying.
