Travora Student · 2027 intake

Study in Germany from Cameroon

Germany is the top destination for Cameroonian students, but the corridor is long. There is no central procedure: the student first checks whether their Baccalauréat or GCE gives direct access to university (otherwise Studienkolleg), learns German and takes an ALTE certificate (Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé: B1 130,000 XAF, TestDaF 73,000 XAF), applies via uni-assist (€75 then €30 per choice) or the university portal, opens a Sperrkonto (blocked account) of €11,904 (7,808,512 XAF) with a bank established in Germany, then submits a national visa application on the consular portal (Auslandsportal) and at VFS Global in Yaoundé (visa fee 50,000 XAF). The embassy in Yaoundé also covers Gabon, Chad, CAR, Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé. The obstacles specific to this corridor are the waiting lists (more than a year for an ordinary admission according to the embassy in 2023), the document authenticity check (up to 12 months), the mandatory original birth certificate and the end of the remonstrance procedure (informal appeal) since July 2025. Main intake: winter semester, in October 2027.

Before the visa

Admission route

Apply university by university: via uni-assist for most public universities (standard procedure or VPD), otherwise on the institution's portal (private schools, many English-taught Master's programs, PhD/doctorate). Cameroon specifics at uni-assist: a GCE holder attaches all their Advanced and Ordinary Level results; a diploma from a private Cameroonian university must come with a certificate from the supervising public university. A bac holder without direct access goes through a Studienkolleg (one year, then the Feststellungsprüfung, assessment exam), by applying via the university or uni-assist. PhD/doctorate: agreement of a thesis supervisor, without uni-assist.[1][2][3][4][5]

Admission procedure fees

  • Uni-assist fee, first choice (per semester)[1]€75≈ 49,197 FCFA

Not refunded, whatever the result; payment only on the uni-assist portal.

  • Uni-assist fee, each additional choice (same semester)[1]€30≈ 19,679 FCFA

In order

The steps

  1. 1

Check university access with your Cameroonian diploma[3][10][11][12]

When: 12 to 18 months before the start of the academic year (from fall 2026 for October 2027)

Check anabin (KMK), the DAAD database or uni-assist's "Check Hochschulzugang" tool. Possible outcomes: direct access, access limited to certain fields, or Studienkolleg. For the GCE, the ZAB list reproduced in 2013 required 6 passed subjects, including at least 2 at Advanced Level and 4 at Ordinary Level (old rule, to be rechecked on anabin). University years completed in Cameroon can replace the Studienkolleg.

  2. 2

Learn German and take an ALTE certificate[5][6][13][14]

When: monthly B1/B2 sessions from July to November 2026; TestDaF on 10/15/2026; 2027 dates not published

The embassy only accepts ALTE certificates (TestDaF, Goethe-Institut, telc, ECL); the oldest module must be less than a year old. Goethe-Institut Kamerun (Yaoundé, rue Joseph Mballa Eloumden): B1 130,000 XAF (module 40,000), B2 150,000 XAF, C1 170,000 XAF, TestDaF 73,000 XAF; registration on the webshop during two-day windows. No Goethe center in Douala. Final enrollment at university: DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4, Goethe C2 or equivalent; B1 is enough to apply to a Studienkolleg.

    • Goethe-Zertifikat B1 (full exam)[13]130,000 FCFA
    • TestDaF[13]73,000 FCFA
  3. 3

    Prepare local documents[15][16][17][18]

When: at the same time as the application

Have your Bac or GCE A-Level authenticated at MINESUP (free apart from stamps). The German Embassy no longer legalizes documents: it can have their authenticity verified (Urkundenüberprüfung), which can take up to 12 months. Documents in German, English or French do not need to be translated; for another language, translation into German by a translator listed on justiz-dolmetscher.de (no recognized sworn translator in Cameroon according to the embassy). Original birth certificate mandatory (with a jugement supplétif (substitute court judgment) and certificate of non-opposition where applicable).

    • MINESUP authentication (stamps)[15]amount not found

Free service apart from stamps; amount not stated.

  4. 4

Apply through uni-assist or the university portal[1][2][3][5]

When: from January to May 2027 for October 2027Duration: 4 to 6 weeks of verification

One form per choice, documents uploaded (diplomas, transcripts, language proof, CV). GCE: all Advanced and Ordinary Level results; private university diploma: certificate from the supervising public university. Verification result in 4 to 6 weeks. Common deadline for the winter semester: July 15, often earlier for Master's programs and Studienkollegs (April 15 or May 31); apply at least 8 weeks in advance.

    • Uni-assist, first choice[1]€75≈ 49,197 FCFA
    • Uni-assist, additional choice[1]€30≈ 19,679 FCFA
  5. 5

Register early in the embassy's appointment system[7][9][19]

    When: as soon as possible

The embassy manages list A (special qualifications: grades, language certificate, scholarship) and list B (ordinary admission). Indicative waiting times published in December 2023: up to 4 weeks in category A, more than a year in category B. These figures date from before studies moved to the Auslandsportal and VFS Global: to be rechecked on jaunde.diplo.de.

    • Appointment booking[7]0 FCFA

      Free.

  6. 6

    Receive the admission[5][20][21]

    When: July-September 2027 (earlier for a Studienkolleg)

Zulassungsbescheid (letter of admission) from the university, admission to a Studienkolleg or an invitation to its entrance test. A conditional admission (German level) entitles you to the visa with enrollment in an intensive course of at least 20 hours per week.

  7. 7

Open the Sperrkonto (blocked account) or gather other proof[6][20][22][23]

When: as soon as you are admitted

At least €992 per month, i.e. €11,904 for one year (7,808,512 XAF at the fixed rate), in a blocked account opened with a bank established in Germany (online providers; the ministry recommends none). The confirmation must state the total amount paid in and the monthly amount available. Alternatives: scholarship certificate, Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation letter) from a guarantor living in Germany. Private university: funding for the first year. Budget for the provider's fees and the international transfer fees.

    • Blocked account provider fees[22]amount not found

Not set by the State; no official scale.

  8. 8

Take out health insurance for the period before enrollment[20][24][25]

    When: before filing

Plain travel insurance is not accepted for studies; you need "incoming" insurance covering you until enrollment, then a German public health fund (€146.29 per month at TK in 2026, from age 23).

    • "incoming" insurance before enrollment[24]amount not found

      Price not recorded.

  9. 9

Online application and submission at VFS Global[6][8][9][17]

When: as soon as you have the admission and the blocked account, at least 2 to 3 months before the start of the academic year

Form and documents on the Auslandsportal, then an appointment at VFS Global in Yaoundé: originals and two photocopies, fingerprints and photo, payment of fees. School documents: Probatoire and Baccalauréat, or O-Level and A-Level. Documents that were not requested are not examined.

  10. 10

    Decision[6][9][16][26]

When: summer 2027Duration: about 2 months, up to 12 months if documents are verified

No guaranteed processing time; the embassy states about 2 months after a complete file, sometimes more, and up to 12 months if documents are verified. Since July 1, 2025, there is no more remonstrance (informal appeal): only an appeal to the Berlin administrative court or a new application remain possible.

  11. 11

Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • The embassy in Yaoundé also handles students living in Gabon, Chad, CAR, Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé, which lengthens the queues.
  • VFS Global has handled all education-related applications since summer 2026; scholarship holders and researchers register directly with the embassy (category 1327), minors with the consular section.
  • The embassy no longer legalizes Cameroonian documents: it can verify their authenticity, taking up to 12 months.
  • Documents in French or English do not need to be translated; there is no recognized sworn translator in Cameroon for other languages.
  • Original birth certificate mandatory: copies and duplicates are refused.
  • Only ALTE language certificates are accepted, with a module less than a year old; a single exam center in Yaoundé.
  • uni-assist requires, for the GCE, all Advanced and Ordinary Level results, and for a private Cameroonian university, a certificate from the supervising public university.
  • Visa fee set at 50,000 XAF (25,000 XAF under 18), free for holders of publicly funded scholarships.

Pitfalls to avoid

Appointment middlemen[7][19]

Registration and appointments are free; no payment speeds up processing; an appointment lost through a third party means registering again and waiting all over again. Only one registration per person.

Fake blocked accounts and fake guarantors[6][20][22]

The blocked account must be opened with a bank established in Germany and the guarantor must live in Germany; a confirmation without the total amount and the monthly sum is rejected.

Very long waiting times[7][16][19]

More than a year's wait in category B according to the embassy (2023), and up to 12 months for document verification: register early and plan for deferring admission to the following semester.

Language certificate too old[6]

The oldest module must be less than one year old when the application is filed: factor in the wait for the appointment.

Copy of the birth certificate[17][26]

Only the original is accepted in Yaoundé; an incomplete file can be refused and there is no longer an informal appeal (remonstration).

Private Studienkolleg without a recognized exam[4]

Only a few private Studienkollegs issue a recognized qualification; before paying, check that the target university accepts their Feststellungsprüfung (assessment exam).

Fake uni-assist payment requests[3]

uni-assist only requests payment on its own portal.

Blocked account amount may increase[22][32]

The ongoing BAföG reform could raise the amount for the 2027 intake: plan a margin.
