Study in Spain from Cameroon

PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit. For Spain, a student living in Cameroon first obtains an admission letter from an officially recognized institution and pays the enrollment fee (matrícula), then requests an appointment at the Spanish Embassy in Yaoundé directly, without any service provider: email to emb.yaunde.citvis@maec.es, then booking on Bookitit. For a grado (bachelor's) at a public university, this must be preceded by the homologation (official recognition) of the bac (€49.76), UNEDasiss accreditation and regional pre-registration (March in Andalusia, June-July in Madrid); a máster or doctorate is obtained directly from the university. The file requires a diploma legalized at MINREX and then at the embassy (5,000 XAF per document), a criminal record extract and a medical certificate (stay of more than 180 days), resources of €600 per month (100% of the IPREM, about 394,000 XAF) on bank-stamped statements, excluding microfinance, and insurance covering all risks, required before the visa is handed over. Visa fee paid in cash at the counter: 59,000 XAF according to the embassy's French page. The embassy advises starting admission and the appointment one year in advance and refuses applications filed less than two months before classes start.

Before the visa

Admission route

No central platform for the visa: admission letter from an officially recognized institution, full-time studies, enrollment paid. Grado at a public university: homologation of the bac to the Bachiller by the Spanish Ministry of Education, UNEDasiss accreditation (optional PCE exams to raise the grade), pre-registration in the autonomous community ("unedasiss" system). Máster and doctorate: direct application, the university checks the level of the degree without homologation ("master-doctorat" system). FP de grado superior (higher vocational training): homologation or proof of application, regional admission ("fp" system). A pre-registration is not enough for the visa: an admission letter is required. PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit.[3][4][5][6][7][8][39][40]

Admission procedure fees

  • Fee for homologation of the bac to the Bachiller (form 790), grado only[1][2]€49.76≈ 32,640 FCFA

2021 amount, to be reconfirmed for 2027; payment from abroad by bank transfer.

  • UNEDasiss accreditation[37][38]amount not found

UNEDasiss fee schedule checked on 13 October 2026: admission score €70; file opening €30.30 and administration €15.15; Bachillerato modality €25; language accreditation €25 per language; subject recognition €25 per authorised subject. PCE exams cost €35/60/80/100/120/140 in total for 1/2/3/4/5/6 subjects. Select the services required by the university: there is no single flat fee. Calculated example: admission score + file opening + administration = €115.45, excluding PCE and other services. The 2027 schedule is unconfirmed; the corridor subtotal excludes these variable services.

In order

The steps

  1. 1

PhD: use the RIN research route[39][40]

When: before any PhD visa application

For a PhD recognised at MECES level 4: apply online to UGE-CE for national research authorisation (article 72 of Law 14/2013), through the doctoral candidate or institution, then obtain a RIN visa if residing abroad. Without a research contract: admission to a RUCT-registered PhD, paid enrolment, MI-T form, compliant insurance, criminal-record certificates covering residence countries over the last two years and a declaration covering five years, and fee 790-038. Required resources: at least 50% of the annual SMI without family, 100% with family according to the ministry; this is not the €600/month student threshold. Confirm the amounts and complete checklist for the individual application and filing year.

  2. 2

    Choose an officially recognized institution[3][12]

    When: September-October 2026 for September 2027

Check the institution's recognition in the Spanish Ministry of Education's search engine for university centers. The embassy recommends requesting admission and the appointment one year in advance.

  3. 3

Grado: bac homologation, UNEDasiss and pre-registration[1][5][6][13][14]

    When: February-July 2027

Request homologation of the Baccalauréat or the GCE to the Bachiller title (diploma and transcripts for the last two years, legalized and translated; fee €49.76): filing gives a "volante" (conditional enrollment slip). Then UNEDasiss accreditation (applications from February 4 to December 1; at least 6 weeks before the end of pre-registration) and, if needed, PCE. Pre-registration in the region: "foreign students" phase in Andalusia (March 6 to 19 in 2026), Madrid single district (until July 6 in 2026 for foreign education systems).

    • Homologación of the bac[1][2]€49.76≈ 32,640 FCFA
  4. 4

    Máster or doctorate: direct application[7][15][16]

    When: depending on the university

No homologation: the university checks that the Cameroonian degree matches the required level and gives access to the same cycle in Cameroon; legalized diploma and transcripts with a Spanish translation. Language level often B2.

  5. 5

    Get the latest diploma legalized[3][10][17]

When: before requesting the appointmentDuration: 3 to 4 weeks to verify a civil status record

Legalization at the Ministry of External Relations (MINREX, in Yaoundé, branch in Douala), then at the Spanish Embassy (5,000 XAF per document, non-refundable). A diploma already legalized by the embassy does not need to be legalized again. Civil status records (birth certificate): prior verification by a lawyer from the embassy's list (3 to 4 weeks, private fees).

    • Legalization by the Spanish Embassy (per document)[17]5,000 FCFA
    • MINREX legalization[17]amount not found

      Fee not found.

  6. 6

Get the admission letter and pay enrollment[4][8]

    When: spring-summer 2027

Admission letter (not a pre-registration) and proof of enrollment payment: both attached to the appointment request.

  7. 7

    Criminal record and medical certificate[3][10][18]

When: in the months before the appointment

Stay of more than 180 days: criminal record extract (bulletin n° 3, registry of the court of first instance) from the countries of residence over the last 5 years, legalized and translated; medical certificate stating the absence of any disease serious for public health, issued by any facility recognized by the Cameroonian Ministry of Public Health.

    • Criminal record extracts (two)[18]4,000 FCFA

2,000 XAF in stamps + 2,000 XAF in issuing fees for two extracts (eRegulations Douala, undated).

    • Medical certificate[10]amount not found

      Fee not found.

  8. 8

    Gather proof of funds[3][10][19]

    When: before requesting the appointment

100% of the IPREM per month of stay: €600 per month (393,574 XAF at the fixed rate; the embassy writes "about 394,000 FCFA"). Original bank statements stamped by the bank covering at least the last 3 months, proof of employment or pay slips. Microfinance funds refused. Possible guarantor: father, mother, brother or sister, spouse, with a letter of commitment made at the bank or before a notary, and supporting documents. Reduced amount if housing is paid in advance.

  9. 9

Request the appointment by email, then on Bookitit[8][9][11]

When: no later than 2 months before classes (before end of July 2027 for September)

Email to emb.yaunde.citvis@maec.es with the SLU code, one per applicant, attachments of 1 MB max; booking on Bookitit with the password received. Appointment at least two months before classes start.

  10. 10

    Filing at the embassy counter[3][10]

    When: appointment date

In-person filing: national visa form, passport (valid at least 365 days, two blank pages, issued less than 10 years ago), photo, admission, proof of payment, resources, criminal record, medical certificate, originals and copies. Spanish translation of all documents, professional translation not required (passport, ID card and bank statements can stay untranslated). Fees paid in cash. An interview may be requested.

    • Visa fee[33][34][35]59,000 FCFA

Embassy's French page (the most recent); former amount 52,000 XAF (English page, IPREM 2022).

  11. 11

    Insurance and decision[3][20][21][22]

When: 1 to 2 months after filingDuration: 1 month (regulation) to 2 months (embassy page)

The health insurance contract (insurer authorized in Spain, all risks of the public system, not just emergencies) is required before the visa is handed over. Timeline: the regulation in force provides for a consular decision within one month at most; the embassy page still says two months from the day after filing, extendable. No answer means refusal; recurso de reposición (administrative appeal) within one month or judicial appeal within two months.

    • Health insurance (all risks of the Spanish public system)[3]amount not found

Price not found from an official source.

  12. 12

    Arrival in Spain[21][23][25][26]

    When: September-October 2027

The visa for a stay of more than 6 months is valid for 90 days: apply in person for the foreigner identity card (TIE) within one month of entry (fee €16.08). Registration in the municipal register (padrón). Work allowed up to 30 hours per week during higher education studies.

Spain's recent official fee schedules give the same amount on the "14-Visado" line (national visas) and on the "14a-Visados Schengen" line: 59,000 FCFA in Dakar (Q1 2026), 1,388 GHS in Accra (January 1, 2025), i.e. about €90 (59,036 FCFA at the fixed rate). Pages announcing "80 EUR" and the Abidjan schedule of May 2024 ("14-Visado" 52,500 FCFA) predate this alignment. These charges concern the study route excluding PhDs. Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • No external service provider: appointment requested by email to the embassy then booked on Bookitit, filing at the embassy counter.
  • Visa fee in XAF, paid in cash at the counter: 59,000 XAF (French page, the most recent; 52,000 XAF on the old English page).
  • Double legalization of the latest diploma: MINREX, then Spanish Embassy (5,000 XAF per document); verification by a lawyer for civil status records.
  • Spanish translation required, but not necessarily professional.
  • Microfinance funds refused; original stamped statements required.
  • Insurance required only before the visa is handed over.
  • Early appointments reserved for public-institution students and Erasmus or AECID scholarship holders.
  • Cameroon is eligible for MAEC-AECID África-Med Máster scholarships (tenured civil servants only), but not for the Fundación Carolina.

Pitfalls to avoid

PhD: a separate research procedure[39][40]

PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit.

Applying too late[3][8]

No appointment less than two months before classes; the embassy advises one year ahead.

Repeated emails[9][11]

A new email before 10 days, or repeated requests within 30 days, lead to the request being deleted.

Pre-registration instead of admission[8]

Only an admission letter with proof of enrollment payment is accepted.

Microfinance funds[3]

Not taken into account: present bank-stamped statements covering 3 months.

Travel insurance[3]

It must cover all risks of the Spanish public system, not just emergencies.

Homologation started too late (grado)[5][6]

File the homologation as early as possible to get the volante, and UNEDasiss at least 6 weeks before the end of pre-registration.

Tuition fees in Madrid[32]

A non-resident non-European pays €113.71 to €136.44 per credit for a grado, i.e. €6,822.60 to €8,186.40 for 60 ECTS.

Forgetting the TIE[21]

To be requested in person within one month of entry.
