Study in Spain from Côte d'Ivoire
PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit. Spain has no national application platform. For a grado (bachelor's) at a public university, you must have the Ivorian bac homologated (officially recognized) as the Spanish Bachiller (fee of €49.76), obtain UNEDasiss accreditation (applications from February 4 to December 1), then pre-register in the target region (from March in Andalusia, June to early July in Madrid); for a máster or a doctorate, the university checks the degree itself. The student visa is submitted in person in Abidjan at BLS International, which forwards it to the embassy (visa 59,000 FCFA and service fee 11,048 FCFA, in cash). For more than 180 days, you need a criminal record extract covering the last five years and a medical certificate; Ivorian documents are legalized (no apostille) and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. The required funds are modest: €600 per month (100% of the IPREM), i.e. 393,574 FCFA. Tuition fees for non-residents can be high (Madrid: €113.71 to €136.44 per credit for a grado). Ivorians who are tenured civil servants can aim for the MAEC-AECID África-Med Máster scholarship.

Máster and doctorate: direct application, the university checks the level of the degree without homologation ("master-doctorate" system). FP de grado superior (higher vocational training): homologation or proof of application. Private schools and language courses: direct application to an officially recognized institution. Differences and pitfalls
What differs from the general rule
- Study visa: book through the BLS portal and submit at BLS Abidjan, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am–1 pm. The embassy’s submission-location page explicitly includes national study visas. BLS contacts: +225 27 20 28 13 43 / 01 60 24 23 61; info.abj@blshelpline.com.

- Côte d'Ivoire does not use the apostille: Ivorian legalization, then legalization by the Spanish Embassy (4,900 FCFA per signature in 2024).
- Sworn translation into Spanish required for Ivorian documents (the embassy in Yaoundé, by contrast, does not require a professional translation).
- Criminal record extract to be requested from the court of your place of birth (Ministry of Justice statement of November 2025).
- MAEC-AECID África-Med Máster scholarship open to Ivorians who are tenured civil servants; Fundación Carolina closed (Latin America and Portugal).
Pitfalls to avoid
PhD: a separate research procedure[41][42]
PhD in Spain: for a new application, first obtain national research residence authorisation from UGE-CE, then apply for the RIN research visa at the consulate. The study visa and IPREM funding threshold below apply to other programmes. This distinction follows ministerial criterion 2/2026 signed on 7 August 2026; it does not imply cancellation of an existing permit.
Wrong submission channel[38]
Special arrangements for family members of EU or Spanish citizens do not apply to ordinary study visas. For studies, use BLS by appointment.
Travel insurance instead of real insurance[12][25]
The insurance must cover all the risks of the Spanish public system, not just emergencies.
Passport too old or validity too short[12]
Passports more than 10 years old are refused; validity of at least one year and two blank pages.
Homologation started too late[5][6]
Homologation is a condition for final UNEDasiss accreditation: apply as soon as you get the bac, and apply to UNEDasiss at least 6 weeks before the end of pre-registration.
Non-resident fees[31]
In Madrid, a non-resident non-European student pays the 4th-enrollment price for a grado (€113.71 to €136.44 per credit): the stay authorization for studies does not count as residence.
Forgetting the TIE[25]
The visa for a stay of more than 6 months is valid for only 90 days: TIE within one month of entry.
Language courses to stay and work[14]
Language and preparatory courses do not allow you to switch to employee status.
Working more than 30 hours[32]
Student work is capped at 30 hours per week in the autonomous community that issued the authorization.
