Study in Belgium from Cameroon

For French-speaking Belgium, a student living in Cameroon handles three procedures in parallel: the équivalence (recognition) of their Baccalauréat or GCE to the CESS for a bachelier (bachelor's) program (from November 15, 2026 to July 15, 2027, €150 because Cameroon is on the reduced-rate list, original school documents required), the admission application to each institution (often before March 31, €200 deposit at ULiège), then the D study visa. A step specific to Cameroon: a verification interview at ViaBel (Institut français du Cameroun), which issues a VEB number, before any appointment at TLScontact (Yaoundé or Douala). Before submission: €251 fee to the Office des étrangers (Immigration Office), criminal record extract authenticated at MINREX then legalized by the embassy, medical certificate, proof of €1,062 per month (696,626 XAF) for 2026-2027, travel insurance. At submission: visa fee (€250 since July 1, 2026, i.e. 165,000 XAF according to the TLScontact schedule; the embassy page still shows the old rate of €180) and 28,500 XAF service fee. Cameroonians are exempt from the additional €4,175 contribution at universities, but they are the largest group of student visa refusals (1,098 refusals in 2025).

Before the visa

Admission route

No central platform in the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (French-speaking community): apply for admission to each university, haute école (university college) or école supérieure des arts, each with its own deadline (around March 31 at universities). For a bachelier (bachelor's), équivalence (recognition) of the secondary diploma to the CESS is mandatory ("equivalence-cess" system); for a Master's, the institution assesses the Licence itself. PhD/doctorate: admission by the doctoral school with a supervisor (promoteur). Flanders (KU Leuven, UGent…): programs in Dutch or English, with their own fees.[1][2][3][4][5]

Admission procedure fees

  • Équivalence of the secondary diploma (reduced rate, diploma obtained in Cameroon)[1][2]€150≈ 98,394 FCFA

Cameroon is on the "€150" list; non-refundable; bachelier (bachelor's) only.

  • Non-EU admission application fee (ULiège example)[3]€200≈ 131,191 FCFA

Deposit deducted from tuition if admitted, lost otherwise; doctoral students exempt.

Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • ViaBel step specific to Cameroon: verification interview at the Institut français and VEB number before any TLScontact appointment; no more appointments after September 30.
  • Criminal record authenticated at MINREX then legalized by the embassy before submission; diplomas and transcripts legalized only after the visa is granted.
  • Équivalence: original school documents required for Cameroon, certified power of attorney, reduced rate of €150.
  • Exemption from the additional €4,175 contribution at universities (ARES circular 2026-001): €1,194 in tuition instead of €5,369; at a haute école, the exemption may be limited to least developed countries.
  • Visa fees payable in XAF only: 165,000 XAF (€250, rate in force since July 1, 2026) according to the TLScontact schedule; the embassy page still shows the old rate (equivalent of €180).
  • Travel insurance required at submission by the embassy in Cameroon, whereas the law only requires it later.
  • Cameroon is eligible for ARES (professionals) and VLIR-UOS (Flemish Master's) scholarships; at UGent, in the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Cameroonians pay rate B with no increased fee.

Pitfalls to avoid

High refusal rate[18][28]

Cameroonians are the largest group of refusals (1,098 out of 2,615 in 2025): a consistent study plan, a solvent guarantor and a complete file are decisive.

ViaBel too late[7][36]

No ViaBel appointments after September 30; some refusals were justified by the enrollment deadline having passed after long waits.

Two separate calendars[3][5][17]

Équivalence before July 15, admission often closed at the end of March, visa recommended before July 1.

Criminal record not legalized[6][16]

The criminal record extract must be authenticated at MINREX (less than 3 months old) then legalized by the embassy before submission at TLScontact.

Budget based on the old threshold[18][19]

€1,062 per month in 2026-2027 (€835 before), and the amount will be indexed for 2027-2028.

Haute école and the additional contribution[37][38][39]

Outside universities, a Cameroonian may have to pay the €4,175 contribution (€5,369 in total): check school by school.

Non-refundable fees[3][4][5][26]

Équivalence, admission deposit, fee, visa and TLScontact service are not refunded.

Academic progress and work[4][40]

Since June 1, 2026, 60 credits after two years of bachelier then 40 per year; working more than 20 hours per week outside vacations jeopardizes renewal.
