Study in Belgium from Gabon

For French-speaking Belgium, a student residing in Gabon handles in parallel the équivalence (recognition) of their bac to the CESS for a bachelier (bachelor's) (from November 15, 2026 to July 15, 2027, reduced fee of €150 because Gabon is on the list, certified true copies), the admission application to each institution (often before March 31), then the D study visa. The long-stay visa is not applied for in Gabon: the Belgian Embassy in Yaoundé (Cameroon) handles long-stay visas and all legalizations for residents of Gabon, via TLScontact (news of September 1, 2026). A Gabonese citizen enters Cameroon without a visa (CEMAC). Unlike Cameroonians, residents of Gabon are exempt from the ViaBel interview. Specific costs: €251 fee to the Office des étrangers (Immigration Office), visa fee (€250 since July 1, 2026, i.e. 165,000 FCFA according to TLScontact; the embassy's page still shows the old €180 fee), 28,500 FCFA service fee, legalization of the criminal record extract. Proof of €1,062 per month (696,626 FCFA) in 2026-2027. Specific to Gabon: it is not exempt from the €4,175 additional contribution at universities (€5,369 per year in total) and is eligible for neither ARES nor VLIR-UOS scholarships. The transfer of Gabon to the Belgian Embassy in Brazzaville, announced for summer 2026, is confirmed only for services to Belgians: check the competent post before submitting.

Admission route

No central platform in the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles: apply for admission to each university, haute école or école supérieure des arts, with its own deadline (around March 31 at universities). For a bachelier (bachelor's), équivalence (recognition) of the Gabonese bac to the CESS is mandatory, with proof of access to higher education in Gabon (otherwise access to short-type higher education only). For a Master's, the institution assesses the Licence itself. PhD/doctorate: doctoral school and supervisor (promoteur). Flanders (UGent, KU Leuven): programs in Dutch or English; Gabon does not appear on any reduced-fee list read at UGent.[3][4][5][6][7]

Admission procedure fees

  • Secondary diploma équivalence (reduced fee, diploma obtained in Gabon)[1][2]€150≈ 98,394 FCFA

    Gabon on the « €150 » list; non-refundable; bachelier (bachelor's) only.

  • Non-EU admission application fee (ULiège example)[3]€200≈ 131,191 FCFA

Deposit deducted from tuition if admitted, lost otherwise; doctoral students exempt.

Differences and pitfalls

What differs from the general rule

  • Long-stay visa and legalizations handled by the Belgian Embassy in Yaoundé (Cameroon), via TLScontact Yaoundé or Douala; short-stay visas represented by France in Libreville.
  • No ViaBel interview for residents of Gabon (required of students residing in Cameroon).
  • A Gabonese citizen enters Cameroon without a visa (CEMAC free movement) for a stay of less than three months.
  • Gabon is not exempt from the €4,175 additional contribution at universities (€5,369 per year), unlike Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Congo, Benin, Senegal and Togo.
  • Équivalence at the reduced fee of €150, on certified true copies (originals are required only for other countries, including Cameroon).
  • Gabon not eligible for ARES (international programs) or VLIR-UOS scholarships; no ANBG scholarship documented for Belgium.
  • Announced transfer of Gabon to the Belgian Embassy in Brazzaville (summer 2026): visa competence not confirmed as of 12/10/2026.

Pitfalls to avoid

Believing all French-speaking Africans are exempt[16][18][42]

Gabon is not in any annex of ARES circular 2026-001: €5,369 per year at university; same contribution at a haute école.

Wrong competent post[8][9]

Submission in Yaoundé (or Douala) as of 12/10/2026; check before submitting that it has not been transferred to Brazzaville.

Criminal record extract not legalized before submission[8][15][22]

Legalization is done in Yaoundé via TLScontact: allow for the processing time, possibly a first trip.

Budget based on the old threshold[27][28]

€1,062 per month in 2026-2027 (€835 before), indexed for 2027-2028.

Two separate calendars[3][5][25]

Équivalence before July 15, admission often closed at the end of March, visa recommended before July 1.

Non-refundable fees[3][5][12]

Équivalence, admission deposit, fee, visa and TLScontact service are not refunded.

Academic progress and work[4][41]

60 credits after two years of bachelier, then 40 per year; more than 20 hours of work per week outside vacations threatens renewal.
