Study in Germany from Senegal
No centralized procedure: a student living in Senegal applies university by university (often via uni-assist, €75 for the first choice, €30 for each additional one), then applies for a national study visa at the German Embassy in Dakar, the only competent authority (no service provider). The application is first submitted online on the Consular Services Portal; only pre-checked applications get an appointment, which is free, and anyone who shows up without a pre-check is turned away. The visa fee is 50,000 FCFA at submission. Proof of funds is a blocked account of €11,904 for the first year (€992 per month), i.e. 7,808,512 FCFA, an amount likely to rise for 2027 with the BAföG reform. Specific to Senegal: Germany objected to Senegal's accession to the Apostille Convention (January 18, 2023), so the Senegalese apostille is not valid in Germany. Documents in French or English do not need translation for the embassy. Direct university access with the Senegalese bac could not be verified (anabin database): going through a Studienkolleg is common for a bac from French-speaking Africa. The Dakar embassy processed 148 study visa applications in 2025.

Admission route
Direct application or via uni-assist (standard procedure or VPD) depending on the institution; Studienkolleg + Feststellungsprüfung (university qualification assessment exam) if the bac does not give direct access; PhD/doctorate through agreement with a thesis supervisor. Recognition of the Senegalese baccalauréat (direct access, restricted access or Studienkolleg) should be checked in anabin or the DAAD database before applying: not verified on 10/12/2026 (dynamic database). Senegalese documents are in French: no translation required by the embassy; uni-assist and universities may ask for certified true copies (rules vary by institution).[2][3][4][5]

The steps
- 1
Check university access with the Senegalese bac[3][4][9]
When: 12 months before the start of classes (October 2026)Check anabin (KMK), the DAAD admission database or uni-assist's 'Check Hochschulzugang' tool: direct access, access restricted to certain fields, or Studienkolleg. Successfully completed university years in Senegal may replace the Studienkolleg depending on the assessment. Result for Senegal not recorded on 10/12/2026.
- 2
Learn the language and get a certificate[10][11][12][13]
When: as soon as possibleGerman-taught programmes: DSH-2, TestDaF (TDN 4) or equivalent for final enrolment; for the visa, generally at least B2 or conditional admission with an intensive course. Studienkolleg: at least B1. Goethe-Institut Dakar offers Goethe-Zertifikat A1 to C2 and TestDaF; in-person registration in early October closes when full. B2/C1 prices are detailed below; other tests remain to be confirmed. English-taught programmes: IELTS/TOEFL as required by the institution.
Goethe Dakar: B2 and C1 in October–November 2026 cost XOF 60,000 for internal candidates / 90,000 for external candidates. Published March–April, July and September 2027 sessions: B2 XOF 80,000 / 100,000; C1 XOF 100,000 / 120,000 (internal / external). Choose a certificate accepted by the programme. TestDaF/IELTS prices unconfirmed; courses and retakes excluded. Do not pay before the centre confirms registration.
- 3
Apply (uni-assist, university portal or Studienkolleg)[1][2][4]
When: December 2026 → May 2027Duration: 4 to 6 weeks of uni-assist reviewUsual deadlines: July 15 for the winter semester (October 2027), increasingly earlier (often April 15 or May 31 for Master's programs and Studienkollegs). uni-assist advises submitting at least 8 weeks before the deadline; result in 4 to 6 weeks.
- 4
Receive the admission (Zulassungsbescheid) or the Studienkolleg invitation[12][13][14]
When: June → August 2027A conditional admission (for example subject to German level) qualifies for the visa with an intensive course of at least 20 hours per week; an invitation to a Studienkolleg entrance test is enough for a preparatory measures visa.
- 5
Open the blocked account (Sperrkonto)[12][15][16][17]
When: as soon as you are admitted€11,904 for one year (€992 per month), i.e. 7,808,512 FCFA at the fixed rate, with an online provider of your choice (the ministry recommends no one). The confirmation must state the total amount and the monthly amount. Budget for the provider's fees and the international transfer fees. 2027 amount to be rechecked (BAföG reform underway).
- Blocked account opening and management fees[15]amount not found
Set by each provider; no official fee scale.
- 6
Submit the application on the Consular Services Portal[5][8][18]

The embassy tells you whether the application is complete; only pre-checked applications can book a free online appointment. Documents not in German, French or English: certified translation. Proof of habitual residence in Senegal for non-Senegalese applicants.
- 7
Appointment at the Dakar embassy[5][18][19]
When: according to the appointment givenIn person, originals, biometrics, payment of 50,000 FCFA (non-refundable) at submission.
- National visa fee[19]50,000 FCFA
Amount shown by the Dakar embassy (language course page); corresponds to the €75 national visa fee.
- 8
Decision[19][20]
When: July → September 2027Duration: 5 to 6 weeks or moreFive to six weeks or more after a complete application (time frame given by the Dakar embassy for language course visas; no time frame published for studies). Since July 1, 2025, no more administrative appeal (remonstration): the only options are the Berlin administrative court or a new application.
- 9
Steps on arrival[21][22][23]
When: October 2027Address registration (Anmeldung) within 14 days; public health insurance (€146.29 per month at TK in 2026 for a student aged 23 or over); enrollment and Semesterbeitrag (semester fee, €100 to €350 per semester); current account, then monthly release from the blocked account; residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' office) before the visa expires (€100).

Differences and pitfalls
What differs from the general rule
- No visa service provider in Dakar: everything goes through the embassy, with a mandatory digital pre-check on the Consular Services Portal before any appointment.
- Apostille: Germany objected to Senegal's accession (01/18/2023); the convention does not apply between the two countries, unlike France, Belgium, Italy and Spain.
- No translation for the embassy: Senegalese documents in French are accepted as they are.
- Visa fee shown in FCFA: 50,000 FCFA.
- Language course visas: the Dakar embassy's waiting list closed on April 29, 2026 (no new registrations possible); a plan based solely on a preparatory language course is therefore blocked in Dakar as of that date.
- Low volume: 148 study visa applications processed in Dakar in 2025, compared with 1,245 in Yaoundé.
Pitfalls to avoid
Showing up without an online pre-check[5]
People who show up without a pre-checked application are turned away without exception.
Appointments for sale[5][6]
The embassy reports fake appointment confirmations sold by scammers; the appointment is free and you book it yourself.
Relying on the Senegalese apostille[25]
It has no effect in Germany (objection of 01/18/2023): ask the university and the embassy which certification they accept (certified copies, verification).
Underfunded blocked account[12][17]
The €11,904 amount may rise for 2027; a confirmation without the total and monthly amounts is refused.
Preparatory language course only[19]
The language course visa waiting list was closed on April 29, 2026 in Dakar.
