Cameroonian, Gabonese or Togolese passport: which one opens the most countries?
Djo has a Cameroonian passport, Ornella a Gabonese one, Koffi a Togolese one. We count the countries each can enter without applying for anything before leaving: the Togolese wins by a whisker.
Djo has a Cameroonian passport. His friend Ornella, from Libreville, has a Gabonese passport, and Koffi, from Lomé, a Togolese one. Both keep telling him their passport beats his. So we count, country by country.
What exactly are we counting?
The countries you can enter visa-free or with a visa on arrival: nothing to apply for before you leave. E-visas are counted separately (you apply online before the trip). The figures are Travora's, checked on 31 October 2026:
| Passport | Visa-free | Visa on arrival | Total, no paperwork | E-visa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cameroonian | 21 | 17 | 38 | 61 |
| Gabonese | 29 | 14 | 43 | 54 |
| Togolese | 30 | 14 | 44 | 56 |
The Togolese wins, by a whisker. In the video, on 16 October, Travora gave him 45 countries; on 31 October he has 44, still one more than the Gabonese.
Why the Togolese wins: ECOWAS
Togo is a member of ECOWAS. A Togolese citizen therefore enters Ghana, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Nigeria… visa-free. A Gabonese citizen has to apply for an e-visa for Abidjan, Accra or Conakry.
The Gabonese surprise card: South Africa
Gabon is on South Africa's official list of exempt countries: 30 days visa-free. Cameroonians and Togolese have to apply for a visa. The Gabonese also enters Hong Kong visa-free (more on that below).
The Cameroonian's strengths
- CEMAC: Gabon, Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad… and Equatorial Guinea, where a Togolese citizen needs a visa;
- Nigeria, visa-free for Cameroonians (90 days), while a Gabonese citizen has to apply for a visa;
- Grenada, in the Caribbean: of the three, only the Cameroonian enters visa-free.
The e-visa king is the Cameroonian
For visas you apply for online, the ranking flips: 61 countries by e-visa for the Cameroonian, against 56 for the Togolese and 54 for the Gabonese. With a phone and a bit of planning, the Cameroonian passport opens a lot of doors (details in our article Cameroonian passport: 90 countries, no embassy).
The one country only one of the three enters visa-free
Hong Kong. Only the Gabonese enters visa-free, for 14 days. Hong Kong's Immigration Department lists Cameroon and Togo as visa-required countries: the Cameroonian and the Togolese have to apply online before the trip.
