Gabonese passport: 97 countries you can visit without going to an embassy

Ornella, from Libreville, swore her passport took her nowhere. Travora counts 29 visa-free countries, 14 with visa on arrival and 54 by e-visa: 97 destinations, no embassy.

A new episode of our series on African passports. Ebelle has already lost this bet several times, Djo five times. This time it's her friend Ornella, from Libreville, who is sure of herself: with a Gabonese passport, "you can't go anywhere". Travora's numbers, checked on 31 October 2026, say something completely different:

Type of accessNumber of countries
Visa-free29
Visa on arrival14
E-visa54
Total without an embassy97

Do you need a visa to go to Cameroon?

No. That's Ebelle's first objection, and it's wrong. Gabon is a member of CEMAC, like Cameroon, Chad, Congo, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. Since 2017, their citizens have moved visa-free between these six countries, for stays of up to 90 days. Malabo, long reluctant, now applies free movement too.

What about Morocco?

Far away, yes, but visa-free for a Gabonese citizen, for up to 90 days. Morocco and Gabon scrapped visas between them, and Gabon is on Morocco's list of visa-exempt countries.

Visa-free countries, all the way to Asia

"Well, that's still Africa"? Not only:

  • Singapore: visa-free for up to 30 days; you just fill in the free SG Arrival Card before you arrive;
  • Malaysia: visa-free for up to 30 days, with the online MDAC arrival card;
  • Hong Kong: visa-free for 14 days, written in black and white on the Immigration Department's list.

In total: 29 visa-free countries.

Countries with visa on arrival

14 countries issue the visa right at the airport, including:

  • the Maldives: a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, with the online IMUGA declaration to fill in before your flight;
  • Madagascar: paid visa on arrival; an e-visa also exists.

Bring a return ticket, a hotel booking and proof that you can cover your expenses.

E-visa countries

The longest list: 54 countries, to apply for online from your phone. Among them:

CountryWhat you need to know
Indiatourist e-visa, Gabon is on the list of eligible countries
Vietname-visa for up to 90 days, on the official website
United Arab Emirates (Dubai)tourist visa to apply for before you travel, no visa on arrival for Gabonese citizens
Ivory Coastonline application, visa handed over on arrival at Abidjan airport

The city at the tip of Africa, visa-free

That's the answer at the end of the video: Cape Town, in South Africa, with its mountain as flat as a table. Gabon is on South Africa's official list of exempt countries: 30 days visa-free. Beyond that, you need a visa. It's a real advantage: a Cameroonian or a Togolese citizen has to apply for a South African visa (see our Cameroonian vs Gabonese vs Togolese passport duel).

What you still need to plan for

"Visa-free" doesn't mean "nothing needed". Most of the time:

  • a passport valid for 6 months after your return date;
  • a return ticket;
  • the online arrival card when the country has one (Singapore, Malaysia, the Maldives…);
  • your yellow fever vaccination card.

Check a specific country

Choose Gabon as your departure country on Travora: the visa guide shows all three lists, and every destination has its own page (documents, length of stay, budget in CFA francs, season).

The other episodes: the Cameroonian passport, the Ivorian passport, the Togolese passport, the Senegalese passport, the Beninese passport and the Burkinabè passport. And to see where Gabon ranks against its neighbours: the CEMAC passport ranking.
