A new episode of our series on African passports. Djo has already lost this bet several times. This time it's his friend Romaric, from Cotonou, who is sure of himself: with a Beninese passport, "you can't go anywhere". Travora's numbers, as of 4 October 2026, say something completely different:

Visa-free countries

ECOWAS, right next door

You'd need a visa even for Togo, right next door? Wrong. Togo, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal… ECOWAS free movement lets Beninese citizens enter without a visa, for a stay of up to 90 days.

What about Niger and Burkina Faso?

They left ECOWAS in January 2025, together with Mali, to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). But the AES remains a visa-free area for ECOWAS nationals. For a Beninese traveller: still visa-free.

A word of caution about Niger: the land border between Benin and Niger has been closed on the Nigerien side since July 2023, and was still closed in June 2026. Check before you set off by road.

Further afield

  • Kenya: up to 60 days, with no visa or online authorisation. Note that since 5 October 2026, you must buy Kenyan health insurance online ($44, about $48 with fees) before boarding;
  • South Africa (30 days);
  • Mauritius;
  • and even Barbados, in the Caribbean (up to 90 days; an exemption described as temporary since 2022).

In total: 38 visa-free countries.

Visa on arrival countries

13 countries issue the visa directly at the airport, including the Maldives and Madagascar. Bring a return ticket, a hotel booking and proof that you can cover your expenses.

E-visa countries

The longest list: 52 countries, where you apply online from your phone. Among them are Thailand, Vietnam, India… and Cameroon.

The big Asian city, visa-free

That's the surprise at the end of the video: Hong Kong. A Beninese citizen can enter without a visa for 14 days, according to the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Watch out for stopovers: depending on your route, a transit country may require a visa.

What you still need to plan for

"Visa-free" doesn't mean "nothing needed". Most of the time:

  • a passport valid for 6 months after your return date;
  • a return ticket;
  • your yellow fever vaccination card.

Check a specific country

Choose Benin as your departure country on Travora: the visa guide shows all three lists, and each destination has its own page (documents, length of stay, budget in CFA francs, best season).

The other episodes: the Cameroonian passport, the Ivorian passport, the Togolese passport and the Senegalese passport. And to see where Benin ranks in West Africa: the ECOWAS Passport Cup.
